This study aimed to describe the counseling process according to people who have attended to a Counselling Centre in Lima, exploring its subjective benefits and weaknesses. As well as knowing if autonomy develops as a result of the counselling process and how it interacts with the participants experience. This study is based on the qualitative methodology under the interpretive constructive approach of González Rey (2006). The results show that the counselling process is associated with an integrative experience of the self, such as a reflective use of thought, generating in subjects a self-questioning and awareness of a diversity of scenarios existing in presenting a problem in their daily lives. It was also found that the counselling process led subjects to face their reason for consultation through their action and decision-making, experiencing the counselling process as an accompaniment to autonomous decision-making. In consequence, it is inferred that encouraging autonomous action as part of the counselling process is an important factor of the experience. Finally, the results show that counselors encourage subjects to experience confidence with the process, stimulating an environment of trust and openness that may be able to withstand an intimate bond.
