Objective: to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial effect of Schinus molle L. (molle) resin against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 strains. Materials and methods: Quantitative, experimental; the population consisted of Schinus molle L. resin. A solubility test and preliminary phytochemical screening were performed. In the microbiological assay, 10 Petri dishes inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 were used and the method used was well diffusion. Resin concentrations were 75, 50 and 25%. Results: in the solubility test, the resin dissolved in polar solvents, while in the phytochemical screening, tannins and α, β unsaturated lactones were identified as main secondary metabolites. Finally, in the microbiological test, the 75% resin presented an average of its inhibition halos of 11.97 ± 0.021 mm, against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Statistical techniques determined that there is a significant difference between each experimental group, although none of these was superior to the positive control. Conclusion: the resin of Schinus molle L. at a concentration of 75% presented an antibacterial effect in vitro against strains of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923.
