To determine if family dysfunction is a factor associated with internet addiction in primary school students from private schools in the Trujillo district. Method: In the present study, 512 students from the private schools San José Obrero Marianistas, Perpetuo Socorro, Interamericano, Alfred Nobel y Claretiano participated. The students were distributed in two groups, group I (45 students who met the criteria for internet addiction) and group II (467 students without internet addiction). Results: The prevalence of internet addiction was 8.79%. The mean internet time in the groups with and without internet addiction was 5.38 ± 5.01 vs. 2.87 ± 3.04 hours respectively (p = 0.001), the mean Apgar score in the group with and without addiction Internet was 6.87 ± 2.20 vs. 7.90 ± 2.37 (p = 0.005); on the other hand, the proportion of family dysfunction in the group with and without addiction was 35.56% vs. 21.20% respectively (p = 0.028), with an OR = 2.05 IC 95% [1.07-3.93]. Conclusions: Family dysfunction was associated with the presence of internet addiction.
