OBJECTIVE: Identify the association between Glomerular Filtration Rate and cognitive impairment in hypertensive patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed an analytical cross-sectional study, that evaluated 95 hypertensive patients, which they were interviewed through a data collection card prepared by the investigator and the mini mental state examination test of Folstein was applied to evaluate the cognitive impairment, considering a score less than or equal to 24 as a cutoff point to consider that the patient had cognitive impairment, the GFR was estimated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation MDRD4 variables based on serum creatinine concentration, age, sex and race. RESULTS: The proportion of cognitive impairment was 17.89% of the 95 hypertensives in study, of which 6 patients with arterial hypertension presented a GFR <60 ml/min/1.73m 2 and 11 patients with arterial hypertension GFR> 60ml/min/1.73m 2 represented by a x2=4,27; p<0,05; OR=3,32 IC 95% which demonstrates statistical significance, the qualitive variables as age and sex presented statistical significance (<0,05) and the quantitative variables as creatinine and GFR presented statistical significance(<0,001). Conclusions: In this study the association between Glomerular filtration rate and Cognitive impairment of hypertensive patients was demonstrated.
