A contracting company in the mining sector whose main activity is to carry out the maintenance of the ball mills used in the concentrate plant in the mining industry, has among its activities the change of linings of said mills. Ball mills have linings, which serve to protect their internal part, in addition these linings have another function that is to lift the internal load (composed of balls, ore, water and chemical additives) of the mill to generate the cascade effect during the turn and in this way carry out the grinding of the ore. This report focuses on the implementation of an engineering control measure in the face of the identification of an intolerable risk in the process called scheduled maintenance work during plant shutdown, carried out by the company. The intolerable risk was evident when the workers had to unbolt the linings of the mill, for which they used a pointed chisel and a camber (one worker took the chisel and another hit the chisel with the camber when doing this work). Due to the fact that there is no adequate tool on the market to carry out the work, we opted for the manufacture of a manual tool, called BOTA PERNOS, using Mechanical Engineering methods, which guarantees the adequate manufacture of the tool. In this way, it was possible to avoid serious injuries to the hands of the workers who were unbolting the linings of the mill. These injuries could have been of such magnitude that they could even have led to the amputation of a worker's hand. In addition, it was possible to show that the manufactured tool (Bota bolts), helped to minimize the time of unbolting the linings of the mill, because the workers carried out their tasks with more confidence, because the possibility of hand injuries was eliminated.
