The environment in which each business sector operates is always influenced by factors that are constantly changing, with varying degrees of significant impact, originating from within or outside the company, affecting one sector but not others, and so on. Faced with the frequent events that different industries encounter and the inherent risks they entail, the question arises as to how risk management impacts business management, specifically in the higher education sector. Based on this question, the current research is conducted with the aim of answering a central question: How does risk management impact the business management of universities in Metropolitan Lima? To achieve this, a theoretical framework is developed that covers both key concepts of business management (main functions) and the COSO ERM 2017 risk management (components and principles). Additionally, relevant data about universities in Peru is detailed, specifically in Metropolitan Lima. Following this, the research plan is developed, outlining the problem, formulating hypotheses, and setting the research objectives. In terms of the thesis's methodological aspect, it presents an explanatory scope with a non-experimental cross-sectional research design. Furthermore, qualitative tools were used in the development of this work, including three in-depth interviews with risk management specialists. Quantitative tools were also employed, involving a population of 35 universities in Metropolitan Lima, of which 33 participated in the designed survey. After completing the research, the general hypothesis is validated, leading to the conclusion that risk management, specifically COSO ERM 2017, improves the business management of universities in Metropolitan Lima in the year 2023.
