Objective: To determine if acute malnutrition as risk factor associated with low acute respiratory infections (bronchiolitis and pneumonia) in children under 2 years of age. Material and Methods: Analytical, observational, retrospective type study, cases and controls. The study sample was constituted by the revision of the HCL and the evaluation nutritional of the children under 2 years of age that were with medical discharged, according inclusion and exclusion criteria established for the 105 cases and 105 controls. The bivariate statistical analysis was performed; using the Chi square test (x2), P significant value with the associations between the study variables: acute malnutrition and pneumonia, acute malnutrition and bronchiolitis, and the consolidated between the acute malnutrition with the low acute respiratory infections (bronchiolitis and pneumonia). It was used the prevalence reason to obtain the Odds Ratio and its 95% CI to evaluate the risk factor. Results: In the statistical analysis were found that the pneumonia [X2 = 14,01; p=0,0001; OR=3,9; IC 95% (1,922 - 7,914)]. And bronchiolitis [X2 = 14,84 ; p=0,0002; OR=3,7; IC 95% (1,899 - 7,211)] were associated to the acute malnutrition. Likewise, the consolidated of the bivariate analysis with the low acute respiratory infections (bronchiolitis and pneumonia), we found significant statistical association with the acute malnutrition [X2 = 20,92 ; p=0,0001; OR=3,8; IC 95% (2,140 - 6,747)]. Conclusions: Acute malnutrition is risk factor associated with low acute respiratory infections (bronchiolitis and pneumonia) in children under 2 years of age. “Leoncio Prado” Hospital - Huamachuco.
