To determine the association between preoperative waiting time for hip fracture and nosocomial pneumonia, in patients aged 60 years and over. Method: Retrospective cohort analytical study. The universe was the medical records of hip fracture patients, hospitalized in the Traumatology area of the Cayetano Heredia Hospital in Piura. Those who developed pneumonia in the preoperative stay were statistically compared with those who did not. Results: The mean preoperative waiting time was 19.54 days. The mean preoperative waiting time according to sex was 20.84 days in men and 18.88 days in women. The mean time for patients between 60 and 69 years was 27.81 days. The general incidence of nosocomial pneumonia in patients older than 59 years with hip fracture during their preoperative stay was 2.94%. It was found that there is no statistically significant difference between the risk of acquiring pneumonia if there is a preoperative stay greater than 30 days or up to 30 days, (Fisher's exact test 0.184) and (P = 0.521). Conclusions: There is no association between the preoperative hospital wait time for hip fracture and nosocomial pneumonia in patients aged 60 years or older.
