Objective: To demonstrate if the use of atypical antipsychotics is a factor associated to dyslipidemias in schizophrenic patients attended at the Hospital Carlos Lanfranco La Hoz. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, case-control study was conducted. The study population consisted of 150 patients, users of antipsychotics; Which were divided into 2 groups: users of atypical and conventional antipsychotics. Results: There were no significant differences in relation to the variables age, gender or origin among the study groups. The frequency of dyslipidemias in schizophrenic patients receiving treatment with atypical antipsychotics was 30%. The frequency of dyslipidemias in schizophrenic patients receiving conventional antipsychotic treatment was 14%. The use of atypical antipsychotics was associated to dyslipidemias in schizophrenic patients with an odds ratio of 2.63, which was significant (p <0.05). Conclusions: The use of atypical antipsychotics is a factor associated to dyslipidemia in patients with schizophrenia seen at the Hospital Carlos Lanfranco La Hoz.
