OBJECTIVES: Determine the effectiveness of the addiction program with and without family therapy on family functionality and relapse prevention in addicted patients of the Trujillo Community Mental Health Center during the period January to July 2018. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study corresponds to an analytical, observational, cohort, prospective design. A total of 80 patients divided into 2 groups (program of addictions with and without family therapy) were chosen. The instrument used was the family APGAR to measure the perception of family functionality. Likewise, the relapse of the patients was verified through the clinical history and by telephone call. RESULTS: The test about the mean of the differences was used to observe the family functionality, pre and post test of the family APGAR, for the first group (addiction program with family therapy), the average difference was 7.50, the standard deviation of differences it was 3.50 (t = 14.5994, p <0.001, for the second group (program of addictions without family therapy), the average difference was 4.23, the standard deviation of differences was 3.18 (t = 3.207, p <0.01) The percentage of relapse of addicted patients at the end of the program of addictions with family therapy was 20% and without family therapy was 77.5% in the Community Mental Health Center Trujillo CONCLUSIONS: a) Family functionality in addicted patients at the end of the program of addictions with family therapy was 85% and without family therapy was 25% in the Center for Community Mental Health Trujillo. b) The percentage of relapse of addicted patients at the end of the program of addictions with family therapy was 20% and without family therapy was 77.5% in the Community Mental Health Center Trujillo. c) The comparison of the incidence of functionality and relapse in addicted patients at the end of the addiction program with family therapy was 85% and 20%, and without family therapy it was 25% and 77.5%, respectively
