The lack of comprehensive sexual education has led to a national health crisis due to the high rates of teenage pregnancy, particularly in rural areas and provinces like San Martín. This situation is a result of inadequate education about sexuality and limited research on the topic. In this context, the overall objective of the present study is to explore the Social Representations (SR) of sexuality in adolescents attending public schools in rural areas of San Martín. To achieve this objective, a qualitative study was proposed using a structural and processual approach to SR. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 adolescents aged between 14 and 17 years, attending a school in a rural area of San Martín. The interviews were guided by an interview script validated by six experts. The results, from a structural perspective, revealed the existence of two dimensions of sexuality: sexuality as a tool for relating to others, and the notion that one must think before engaging in sexual activity. It is noteworthy that adolescents perceive sexuality as a right within the first dimension. Regarding the second dimension, adolescents establish rules to guide their sexual behavior. On the other hand, from a processual perspective, it was found that their direct and indirect experiences, as well as the influence of adults with whom they spend time (teachers and family members), play a significant role in the construction of their SR.
