Background: Multimorbidity is a risk factor for cognitive impairment (CI). Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HTA) are diseases which are related to CI. However, the association between multimorbidity for both and CD has not been studied in middle- and low-income countries, where the magnitude of the association might be different. Aim: To evaluate the association between multimorbidity due to DM and HT with CD in Tumbes, Peru. Methods and materials: Secondary database analysis of a cross-sectional study in Tumbes. The exposure variable was multimorbidity for both diseases and the outcome variable was CD, defined as a score of ≤ 26 on the Leganés cognitive test. The generalized linear model was used and the prevalence ratio (PR) with its 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was estimated. The same analysis was performed by age subgroups. Results: The mean age was 48.2 years, with 50.3% of participants being women. The prevalence of CD and multimorbidity was 34.4% and 3.5%, respectively. Regarding the association between multimorbidity and CD, the adjusted analysis did not show it (PR 1.32 CI95% 0.97-1.81). However, isolated HTA was associated with greater CD (PR 1.2 CI95% 1.04-1.45). Finally, in the subgroup aged ≥ 50 years, an association was found between both variables (PR 1.45 1.04-2.01). Conclusions: No association was found between multimorbidity due to DM and hypertension with CD.
