Mining activity in Peru continues to increase and so does the generation of mining tailings, which are the waste of this activity, which is stored in earthen dams. In recent years, there have been cases of large-scale dam failures in Canada and Brazil, such as the cases of Mount Valley and Brumadinho, affecting not only infrastructure and the environment, but also generating loss of human life. Due to the importance of knowing the potential damage that a dam break can generate, this project examines the comparison between the empirical and numerical method through the Rico el al. model. (2007) and dam failure modeling through the FLO-2D modeling software respectively, of a tailings dam located in the central highlands of Peru. Rico's empirical model uses general information about the dam to estimate the distance and volume of tailings released, which provides basic information on the possible area of impact and the flow path. On the other hand, the numerical model requires more specific characteristics of the tailings and the dam, which allows the model to be more precise in obtaining the released volume and the flood footprint. This research contemplates the stability analysis of the dam as part of the structural evaluation, through which it has been determined that there is a potential risk, which justifies the need to carry out a dam breakage analysis. Subsequently, breakage analyzes have been carried out using empirical and numerical methods and results have been obtained which have been compared to finally determine what the applications, benefits and limitations of both methods are. Likewise, the damage to infrastructure, environment and people has been estimated according to the results obtained from the developed models.
