Introduction: The impact of the effect that dogs cause on people's depressive symptoms has aroused growing interest in the fields of psychology and health. There is growing attention towards the relationship between this exposure and the manifestation of depressive symptoms. Objective: Determine the effect of exposure to animal-assisted therapy in adults with depressive symptoms. Methods: The search was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Embase databases. Studies that met the following criteria were included: i) Randomized controlled trial-type studies (phase 2 and phase 3), ii) adults from 18 years of age, with depressive symptoms, iii) exposure to animal-assisted therapy as an experimental/research group. intervention, and iv) standard of care as a control group. The primary outcome was the effect of exposed animal-assisted therapy on adults with depressive symptoms. Results and conclusion: Seven randomized controlled trials were obtained to determine the primary objective. It is suggested that exposure to animal-assisted therapy, through programs that use dogs, could have a positive impact on mental health and reduce depressive symptoms in adults. It is recommended that future studies focus on studying how this complementary therapy affects depressive symptoms in adults, and the effects that may transcend the approach to depressive symptoms, which is comprehensive in nature.
