Purpose: To evaluate the association between the use of digital devices and the prevalence of refractive errors in Peruvian children from 3 to 11 years old. Methods: We performed a secondary database analysis of the DHS-Peru at two points in time (2014 and 2018) and conducted a retrospective analytical cross-sectional study. We conducted a generalized lineal model to calculate prevalence ratios, taking into account the complex sample design. Results: The prevalence of the use of digital devices at a distance less than 30-centimeters was 17.91% (2014) and 24.11% (2018), and refractive errors were 5.91% (2014) and 6.73% (2018). Approximately 9.3% and 9.5% of the children who used digital devices reported a diagnosis of a refractive error in 2014 and 2018, respectively. Children who used digital devices in 2014 were 1.212 times more likely to have been diagnosed with a refractive error than children who did not (p value = 0.034) (CI 95% 1.014-1.449). In 2018 they were 1.164 times more likely to have been diagnosed with a refractive error than children who did not (p value = 0.045) (CI 95% 1.003-1.351). In the diff-in-diff model no significant changes in the prevalence of refractive errors in both years were found. Conclusion: This study showed a high prevalence of refractive errors and the use of digital devices in Peruvian children. The results showed an association between refractive errors and the use of digital devices in children from 3 to 11 years old in Peru.
