Background: pneumonia in children under five years of age is common in developing countries, children in our Loreto region live in conditions of poverty which makes them more vulnerable, personal, environmental and socioeconomic factors associated with pneumonia in children under five have been identified in our town. Objective: To determine the factors associated with pneumonia in children under five years of age at the Regional Hospital of Loreto. Materials and methods: A case-control study was carried out, which included children under five years of age hospitalized in the pediatric area of the Loreto regional hospital between 2020 and 2021 in the city of Iquitos, of which 83 children were included with a diagnosis of pneumonia and 154 children with diagnoses other than pneumonia who met the inclusion criteria. Data was taken from the medical records in a data collection form, whose collected data was stored in a database in the Excel program to later be imported into the SPSS 26 program where the analysis was carried out using Pearson's X2 Test with significance statistics with a value of p < 0.05 and the Odds Ratio with their respective 95% confidence intervals. Results: Factors associated with pneumonia were found: overcrowding in the home (OR: 2.85, 95% CI: 1,644 - 4.949; p = 0.001), older infant (ages 13 to 24 months) (OR: 2,779, 95% CI: 1.459 - 5.293; p = 0.005) with respect to younger infants and preschoolers, younger infants (OR: 2.077, 95% CI: 0.053 - 4.098; p = 0.049), belonging to a low socioeconomic level (OR: 1.956, 95% CI: 1.075 - 3.560; p= 0.027), history of IUGR (OR: 2.434, 95% CI: 1.003 - 5.903; p = 0.04) and as a protective factor against obesity (OR: 0.266, 95% CI: 0.073 - 0.960; p = 0.049). Conclusions: Overcrowding in the home, a history of IUGR, obesity for nutritional status, ages between 6 and 24 months, and belonging to low socioeconomic levels are associated with pneumonia in children under five years of age hospitalized at the Loreto Regional Hospital between the ages of 2020 -2021.
