The objective of the study was to analyze the perception of pet owners about the conditions or criteria they take to resort to euthanasia of their pets in Metropolitan Lima. To this end, an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was developed based on surveys that were implemented in Google Forms format. Participants responded to the survey and the data was automatically stored in a Google Excel format. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize the information. 405 surveys were obtained, predominating female owners (75.1%) aged 26 to 50 years (55.1%) and university higher education level (78.8%). 99.8% had heard about euthanasia. 50.1% had requested it for an animal they owned and 99.0% of them considered that they made the decision under relevant and appropriate reasons, 96% considered that the veterinarian helped them make an informed decision, 50.7% considered that a special environment for euthanasia should be implemented, 96.1% considered that euthanasia was the best option to alleviate the suffering of their pet and their family, and 78.3% were affected by having made the decision. Among all respondents, 90.4% (366) agreed with the practice of euthanasia in pets and 95.3% (386) considered that the veterinarian can recommend euthanasia, if he considers it appropriate. I concluded that it is necessary for the veterinarian who performs euthanasia to maintain open, respectful and understandable communication, in addition to receiving training in psychological strategies to give the recommendation of euthanasia, properly handle the sadness that this decision causes the owner and to accompany them in those moments.
