In response to limited information obtained via visual inspection used as methodology to identify the structural condition in reinforced concrete bridges alongside analysing the possibility for preventive maintenance; non-destructive testing methods (known as NDT methods for short) are used to auscultate reinforced concrete bridges in metropolitan Lima area. NDT methods calculates the materials mechanical proprieties of the bridges structural elements to establish the superstructure condition, e.g., the axial compressive strength of reinforced concrete elements and concrete thickness for steel bars; due to both destructive and non-destructive testing are guide more to corrective maintenance instead of preventive maintenance. Non-destructive testing complements the visual inspection, that recognizes external pathologies affecting the correct functioning of the structure such as concrete cracks, air volumes inside concrete elements and exposed rusty steel bars. The obtained results: rebound number, location and concrete thickness for steel rebars, ultrasonic wave velocity and compressive strength were compared with ASTHO codes presented in the Guide for Bridge Inspection of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, determining the structural condition of the bridges.
