Objectives. To determine the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and tuberculosis relapse (TB) in Peru between 2013 and 2017. Materials and methods. We performed a case-control study, and we selected three controls for each case using the database of the Epidemiological Surveillance System of TB in Peru. The cases were patients with TB relapse according to conditional admission, and the controls were new patients or never treated with TB. Results. DM was not associated with TB relapse (OR 0.88, 95%CI 0.77-1.01) after adjusted for the following variables: lung location, HIV, history of multidrug resistance contact, drugs use, alcohol consumption, sex, and age. Conclusions. This study shows that DM is not associated with TB relapse, probably because there are other more important factors. Although this study indeed had a large sample size, more cohort studies should be carried out to clarify this relationship.
