This paper presents the analysis of 60 years of evolution of agricultural sector production from 1950 to 2011 and relates it to agricultural research and extension. It is a non-experimental investigation that is exposed in three parts whose focus is the analysis of the behavior of agricultural production and the factors as harvested area, yields per ha and the structure of land use. Then it is related to agricultural research and extension. This work has used more than 200 statistical series that were subjected to exploratory analysis through graphical representations of sequences with line diagrams, consistency analysis and homogenization through conversions and adjustments using the three-year moving average and weights. The Method Effects was applied to the adjusted statistical series for each of the 49 crops and their corresponding groups. The results of the investigations show that: (a) The agricultural sector has been subject to the development models that privileged other sectors of the economy, which generated agricultural production with more than 30 years of continuous stagnation from 1950 to 2011 (b) When relating the production to the factors mentioned, the calculations show that, the harvested area factor has defined the evolution of agricultural production both as in the periods of expansion and stagnation. The factors of yield and structure of land use have played a secondary role and during periods of stagnation the tendency to decrease agricultural production has been reduced. (c) When analyzing the performance factor as an indicator of the contribution of research to agricultural production, its positive contribution is particularly evident in times of stagnation despite the weak institutionality and poor financing of the state and the private sector. Finally, the conclusions and recommendations are presented.
