Objective: To determine the clinical characteristics of periodontal tissue in people addicted to the consumption of recreational marijuana who are in recovery at the “Nuevo Amanecer“ Rehabilitation Center. Material and methods: Descriptive and transversal study. The sample consisted of 50 male patients from the Rehabilitation Center “Nuevo Amanecer“, whose ages ranged between 18 and 40 years. A data collection form and a clinical evaluation form were used. Results: It was found in the study group that the most prevalent recreational marijuana consumption time was from 1 to 5 years and the most frequent age range of patients from 18 to 25 years. The majority of these did no present periodontal pocket (64%), but a moderate level of clinical adherence (56%) (40%) and gingival bleeding (52%). In addition, 90% did not present furcation or mobility compromise. dental. These mostly had a level of regular oral hygiene. Conclusion: In our study, patients under 25 years of age who used recreational marijuana between 1 and 5 years did not present major alterations in the periodontium; on the other hand, patients between 26 and 40 years of age showed greater deficiencies of periodontal health It was also shown that the majority of patients revealed a mild and moderate average level of clinical adherence together with gingival bleeding, however, there was an absence of periodontal pocket, tooth mobility and furcation compromise in most of the study group. Therefore, it can not be guaranteed that the consumption of marijuana directly causes damage to the periodontal tissue, but rather this is due to the side effects of the consumption of this drug, such as xerostomia and eating disorders, in addition to this, poor oral hygiene will ultimately contribute to an accelerated deterioration of the periodontal tissue.
