Many causes afflicted Peru in 2017, specifically in the management and planning of the hydraulic works for their protection; one of the principal factors that damaged these structures was the phenomenon of "El Niño costero"” which took place in the mentioned year. In consequence, it is of paramount importance the assessment of damage caused in the existing physical hydraulic infrastructure, as it allows to prepare an adequate and sustainable planning. For this reason, the improvement of the hydraulic design of an intake located in the north of the territory, which is named Zapatero, was carried out; this improvement was not only to prevent and protect damaged works in the takeover, but also benefited 1022 families in order to be able to irrigate the agricultural hectares that are in the study area, ensuring an adequate capture of the water resource. The methodology included the collection and, fundamentally, the evaluation of the fieldwork of the basic studies at the level of technical file of the project "Rehabilitation of the water service for irrigation of the Zapatero canal in the district of Olmos, Cascajal hamlet". Furthermore, hydraulic and structural design criteria were established for the intake and retaining walls respectively. The results show that the design of the structures and the spillway or diversion dam have a direct relationship with the two-dimensional modeling that was performed in a stretch of the Cascajal river near the catchment. Finally, were verified with the recommendations of authors, hydraulic specialists - structural and design manuals that the structures were successfully calculated, fulfilling all the parameters, variables and criteria established.
