The purpose of this study was to identify if there is a association between romantic relationships and emotional dependency in students from two private universities in Lima. The sample was conformed by 163 psychology students, with ages ranging between 16 and 29 years. The Relationship Rating Form (RRF) and the Emotional Dependency Instrument (CDE) were used to mesaure the data. An spearman analysis was carried out; in which it was found that the emotional dependency positively correlated with the dysfunctional aspects of romantic relationships and also with some functional aspects of relationships. The results show that there is a higher level of satisfaction, commitment and maintenance of the relationship when there are greater behaviors of seeking attention-affective expression and modification of plans; and there is a higher level of conflict in the relationship the more dependent behaviors arise. This results reveal that the emotional dependency has both, adaptive and maladaptative effects in couple relationships.
