This study examined associations between parental psychological control and externalizing and internalizing problems in a group of 170 high school adolescents between 13 and 17 years old from a private school in Lima (58.2% males, females 41.8%). The Parental Psychological Control Scale DAPCS-S that measures the perception of the dependence dimensions and the parents' self-criticism and the Youth Self Report Inventory that measures emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents were used. The results showed a positive and significant correlation with the different types of achievement-oriented parental psychological control (APC) and dependency (DPC) whit the externalizing and internalizing problems. The maternal DPC and paternal APC were those that better explained the emotional problems, significantly in adolescent women. In the case of externalizing problems, the maternal and paternal DPC explained in a most significant way the criminal behavior in adolescent males.
