--- Race horses represent the constancy selection and improvement of the equine species. These animals are subjected to training schemes for months before a race where performance is only evaluated by clinical observation of the animal. There are other variables that may be useful for this purpose like erythrocitic values (Red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit) and serum muscle enzymes (CK, AST and LDH). To characterize exercise of this in this race, there were conducted a study with 24 two-year-old Thoroughbred horses (PSC) between males (n = 12) and females (n = 12) who were selected to participate in speed horse competitions. The effect of exercise on the kinetics of erythrocitic values and muscle enzymes was evaluated. Blood samples were taken at rest (T0), 5 minutes (T1), 1 hour (T2) and 24 hours (T3) after exercise monthly during five months. Average and standard deviation were determined. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post estimation analysis of variance was used to determined linear and quadratic effect of each variable. Linear Mixed Model and dummy variables were used to determine statistically significant difference (p<0.05). The RBC count, hemoglobin and hematocrit increased significantly with exercise in T1 time compared to the reference level and only increased significantly with exercise towards the last month (M5) with respect to the reference level. In the other hand, serum enzymes, such as LDH increased significantly only at the times T1 and T2, while the AST did not show significant variations in days not in months. Finally, the CK had significant increases in time T2 with respect to the reference level. Key words: Throroughbred horses, erythrocytic values, muscular enzymes, exercise, CK, AST, LDH
