Metabolic Syndrome increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and Diabetes mellitus type 2, for this reason it is necessary to perform a study of the prevalence of metabolic syndrome to strengthen preventive measures and also make changes in lifestyle. Materials and methods: The following investigation is a cross-sectional, descriptive study, carried out with a sample of 191 patients who attended the outpatient clinic, II-2 Tarapoto Hospital, from July to November 2016, in whom measurements, in fasting conditions, of weight, height and blood pressure were made, abdominal perimeter and obtaining laboratory tests: glucose, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Results: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome according to ATP-III criteria was 40.8%, (95% CI), it was presented in a higher percentage in the female gender and the highest criterion was abdominal obesity (38.2%). The most frequent risk factors were: physical inactivity (33.5%), consumption of chicken meat (24.6%) and obesity in 25.7%. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in the younger female population, the most important risk factor being physical inactivity, but no relation was found with the metabolic syndrome.
