The present study is a mixed research that aimed to test the relation among socioeconomic status (SES), perceived barriers and educational and occupational aspirations of adolescents of the latest school grades in public and private high schools of Lima, Peru. From a qualitative study, in which adolescents were asked for their main perceived barriers to achieve their educational and occupational goals, a quantitative scale was constructed to measure such difficulties. Subsequently, correlations were made among four variables: educational and occupational aspirations, an index of socioeconomic status, and perceived barriers. The main results indicated that: 1) youngsters from lower SES showed lower educational and occupational aspirations in contrast with higher SES peers, 2) Stronger perceptions of difficulties about the lack of parental support to career decision and not having enough time to study were related to lower SES and lower educational aspirations, and 3) Stronger perceptions of lack of interest and academic support from teachers were related to lower SES and lower occupational aspirations. Results were discussed in relation to the methodological approach used and the implications of the study for the educational policy and the understanding of vocational development of Peruvian youngsters mainly for those who are in social disadvantage.
