The aim of this research was to approach social representations (SR) of violence against women (VAW) in authorities from a coastal rural district. All of it, in order to understand the phenomenon’s meaning and explanations through a cultural, socio-historical and emotional perspective. The techniques that allowed knowing the participants and the context in which the social representations are built were the timeline, participant observation and the field logbook. On the other hand, the Natural Semantic Networks technique was used to comprehend the phenomenon’s definition among the authorities, while the semi-structured interviews, both definition and explanations. Overall, it was found that authorities have a bigger recognition of violence in the private sphere more than the public one. On the other hand, a double standard was identified: violence means to them the maintenance of unequal gender relations, but default of female roles was considered the phenomenon’s cause. Additionally, the participants can only sensitize with violence’s involved actors of their same gender. First of everything mentioned, punishment and violence are considered the only solutions to counter VAW, as shown in the core network sense.
