The research work presented aims to make a comparison of anxiety in learning and reading comprehension in English as a foreign language among university students of basic and intermediate level of a language center in the district of Surco. The sample was 236 students (males and females) between 17 and 32 years of age. Within the population in question 162 students were studying in the basic level course while the other 74 were in the intermediate level. The design of the present study is descriptive level, substantive type and comparative descriptive design. Similarly, the instruments used to collect data were the Mexican Spanish version of the “Foreign language Classroom Anxiety scale” (FLCAS), for measuring anxiety in learning English as a foreign language, while The instrument 'The Reading Anxiety scale' was adapted to Spanish to measure anxiety in reading comprehension in English. The results obtained showed that there are no significant statistical differences between the groups studied in any of its two variables. However, as complementary data, it was possible to establish that the level of anxiety experienced by both levels was the same, that is, despite the fact that both groups had different immersion times with the language, they demonstrated to have an intermediate level of anxiety both during the learning of the English language as during the reading comprehension of a text in the same language.
