This research was focused on understanding perceptions of the competencies of court interpreters in the Peruvian criminal justice system. The research approach was qualitative, exploratory, basic, and with an instrumental case study design. The research consisted of 5 subcategories, which were analyzed in interviews. The results of the study showed that the court interpreter must be fluent in their foreign and native languages in their labor. Further, it is also necessary for the interpreter to construct a message using the correct grammar in the working languages and the use of legal jargon represents an essential factor to be able to carry out a court interpreting in a satisfactory performance. Henceforward, the use of legal dictionaries, as well as terminological glossaries that meet the quality standards are essential working tools for their professional development. In Peru, there is a constant need for interdisciplinary training on legal terminology for court interpreters working in the Judiciary of Peru.
