Introduction: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is present more frequently in the hemodialysis population and has been associated with anxiety, possibly explained by the presence of sympathetic hyperactivity and higher cortisol levels, sleep interruption and mood changes, causing high rates of anxiety, depression and stress. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, analytical, and observational study. The population consisted of 313 adults over 18 years of age with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis treatment for more than 3 months in private clinics in metropolitan Lima. Our objective was to evaluate the association between RLS and the presence of anxiety symptoms in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. For this purpose, the instruments used to measure these variables were the Basic Set of Questions for Epidemiological Studies (CBPEP) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) respectively. Sociodemographic, lifestyle and hemodialysis treatment time variables were also evaluated. The Poisson regression model was used to determine the crude and adjusted prevalence ratio (PR), due to the study design and the prevalence exceeding 10%. We considered a significant association, a p value <0.05 Results: In total, data from 313 patients were analyzed. The predominant sex was female with 53.67%, the average age was 55.82 years and the median time on hemodialysis treatment was 40 months. Of the total population, 67.41% had symptoms of RLS and 52.40% had minimal symptoms of anxiety. In the multivariate analysis, a significant association was found between RLS and anxiety (RPa=1.39; 95% CI: 1.15 1.71; p=0.001). Conclusion: Patients on hemodialysis with RLS are 39% more likely to present symptoms of anxiety compared to a patient without symptoms of this syndrome.
