The present study sought to determine the adsorption capacity of banana peel to reduce nitrates in the surface water of the Huaycoloro Creek, Ramiro Prialé highway section, during the year 2024. A basic research type, quantitative, descriptive and experimental approach was used. The study population was the water flow of the Quebrada Huaycoloro in that section. Water samples were collected with a total volume of 20 liters, using composite sampling techniques and GPS reconnaissance of the environment and for the sample: composite sampling. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel, Minitab 17 and OriginPro 2024 programs. Two weekly monitoring were carried out during 2 weeks. The Water Quality Index (WQI) was applied to evaluate the quality of the water body. Granulometry and contact time tests were carried out in the external laboratory. An 86.83% reduction in nitrates was obtained after 72 hours of agitation with 250 μm particles. The optimum dose of banana peel was 4 g/L, with an adsorption rate of 0.0733 h-1 and a maximum adsorption time of 40 hours. The efficiency of plantain peel against nitrate was 84.941%. In conclusion, this study has demonstrated the effectiveness of plantain peel (Musa paradisiaca) as an efficient adsorbent for nitrate reduction in the surface waters of the Quebrada Huaycoloro.
