The objective of the study was to determine the phytochemical screening and acute toxicity of the ethanolic extract of leaves of Ayapana elata "cagüena" in Mus musculus albine strain Balb / C mice. For the phytochemical screening the method described by Olga Lock was used, based on the difference of solvents according to polarity; Acute Toxicity was evaluated according to the Acute Toxic Class Method, described by OECD Regulation No. 423, 4 groups of 3 mice each were formed, the ethanolic extract of leaves of A. elata being administered at a dose of 2000 mg / kg p.c., 200 mg / kg p.c. and 25 mg / kgp.c. and observing the appearance of toxic clinical signs for 14 days, At the end of the experiment, the mice were sacrificed and the anatomopathological observation of internal organs was performed. The results show the presence of Alkaloids (++), Triterpenes and steroids (+), Lactones and coumarins (+), Reducing sugars (++), Phenols and Tannins (+) and the toxicological evaluation does not show signs of toxicity or alteration in internal organs. It is concluded that the ethanolic extract of Ayapana elata does not present acute toxicity.
