Objective: This study aimed to determine the risk factors associated with recurrent urinary tract infections in patients at the Essalud III Iquitos Hospital during 2016. Materials and Methods: An analytical, observational, transverse-quantitative study was designed. All patients over 17 years of age with a diagnosis of urinary tract infection, who had confirmation by urocultive, attended at all hospital services. The information was collected to a file for the review of the medical records that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS: A total of 118 patients with a diagnosis of urinary tract infection were analyzed. They were confirmed by urocultive in any of their episodes, of which 37 were patients with recurrent infection, while 81 were in the Patients group without recurrent infection. These two groups were compared to evaluate the variables under study. Of the total number of patients, 89 (75.42%) were female and 29 (24.58%) were male. The mean age of the population in the group of patients with recurrent UTI was 62.35 ± 10.97 years, while in the group without recurrent UTI the mean age was 59.23 ± 17.69 years. Through analysis, it was possible to identify that age greater than 55 years (p = 0.000), Diabetes Mellitus (p = 0.015), Chronic Renal Disease (p = 0.000), Nitrofurantoin use as an antibiotic-type drug during treatment of the first UTI episode (p = 0.006), oral route of administration at the antibiotic-type drug during treatment of the first UTI episode (p=0.009); were the variables statistically associated with recurrent urinary tract infection. On the other hand, it was possible to identify those others bacteria identified in urocultive different than E. coli, Proteus sp. Or Klepsiella sp are associated with a statistically significant lower risk of recurrent urinary tract infections. 8 CONCLUSIONS: Recurrent urinary tract infection is associated with age over 55 years, Diabetes Mellitus, Chronic Renal Disease, use of Nitrofurantoin as treatment of the first UTI episode and route of oral administration during the first UTI episode.
