Environmental indoor air quality of health centers can be disrupted by microbiological contamination caused by fungi. Loreto region is characterized by its tropical climate and high dispersion of its human population which facilitates the successful proliferation of fungi in the environment. Dozens of patients attending health centers in the region are exposed daily to the presence of fungi, so it is necessary to develop air control quality to develop strategies to protect both patients and workers. In order to determine the presence and frequency of Penicillium fungi we performed a microbiological analysis of the air in two health centers of the Loreto region. Between September-December 2015 eight samplings were made in five ambulatory environments Morona Cocha and San Antonio health centers. We isolated 40 fungi colonies in the health center Moronacocha and 40 fungi colonies in the health center of San Antonio using the method of horizontal deposition on plates. Using macroscopic and microscopic characterization, we found that the health center of Moronacocha presented a high concentration of the fungus Penicillium (62.2%), followed by Aspergillus (25%) and others (12.5%). On the other hand, the health center of San Antonio was dominated by the genus Aspergillus (47.5%) followed closely by Penicillium (35%) and others (17.5%). In addition, no significant difference was found in the presence and frequency of fungi among the different environments in both health centers which implies that all studied areas are contaminated in similar measure. The air quality of the health centers we studied is not poor since there is a high concentration of fungi in both centers, especially of the genus Penicillium. A periodical monitoring and control of environmental air quality in health centers need to be implemented in order to reduce the presence of fungi and prevent the development of fungal infections in patients.
