Introduction: Synthetic oxytocin is the most commonly used drug in obstetric practice, studies refer to exogenous oxytocin, a mechanism of hemolysis would produce neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, which is a pathology that can produce serious complications both by itself and by the treatment received. Objective of the study: To determine the existence of the association between neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and the use of oxytocin during labor at the Hospital de Loreto in the year 2016 to 2018. Methodology: A retrospective, analytical case-control study was carried out, the clinical records of 138 neonates were reviewed, of which 46 cases were term neonates, born in eutocic delivery with a clinical or laboratorial diagnosis of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. mothers without significant medical or obstetric history that required or not the use of oxytocin during labor, without associated pathology and 92 controls who were full term neonates, born in euthocic delivery without clinical or laboratorial diagnosis of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, of mothers without important medical or obstetric history that required or not the use of oxytocin during labor, without associated pathology. Determining the association through Chi square test and Odds ratio. Result: It was observed that in 39 (28.3%) of neonates selected for the study, oxytocin was used in mothers during labor. Of the total number of neonates with hyperbilirubinemia, 47.83% (22) if oxytocin was used during labor, while in the neonates who did not present hyperbilirubinemia, 81.52% (75) did not use oxytocin. The statistical analysis of chi-square was carried out in which the existence of significant statistical difference was determined (p = 0.000307); the Odds ratio analysis shows a value of 4,044, with a 95% confidence interval of 1,850 and 8,842. Conclusion: The risk of developing neonatal hyperbilirubinemia when oxytocin is used during labor in the mother is 4 times; the use of oxytocin during labor in the mother if it is a risk factor for the onset of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.
