In order to evaluate the diameter increment pattern of individual trees in a terra firma climax forest from the central Brazilian Amazonia, 85 trees distributed in a plain forest were selected and grouped in three diameter classes (20 cm<DAP<40 cm, 40 cm<DAP<60 cm and DAP>60 cm). Then, a stainless steel dendrometic band was attached around the stem of the chosen trees and fastened with a small tension spring; the increment in the window gap of the band is measured with a digital vernier and shows the growth of the circumference which in turn is transformed in the diameter. Measurements were carried out monthly along 13 months, from January 2005 to January 2006. The current annual increment rate (AIR) in diameter was 2,83 mm within a confidence interval of 2,73 mm to 3,28 mm (a = 0,05).
