We evaluated the potential toxicological repeated dose 90 day, oral dried aqueous extract of the leaves of Uncaria guianensis (Aubl.) Gmel "Cat Claw", taking into account the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Economic Development TG 408 and the Ethical Principles in Animal Experimentation. We used 72 albino rats of both sexes divided into two experimental groups in doses of 100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg bw, respectively, and a negative control group (NaCl 0.9%). Daily clinical observations were made, control of body weight every 15 days determinations hematological parameters (hematocrit, leukocytes, lymphocytes and segmented), biochemical (albumin, total bilirubin, total cholesterol, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, glucose, total protein, glutamic transaminase -oxaloacetic, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase and urea), as well as studies of organs and histopathological macroscopic liver and kidneys every 30 days until the end of the evaluation. During the trial there were no clinical signs of toxicity in any of the animals treated groups, when these were compared with the negative control group. Neither showed changes in body weight during the 90-day trial. In the hematological and biochemical values showed slight variations (Table N º 1 to 28) who had no biological significance because they were within the normal range established by the control group and according to the literature (54). No macroscopic lesions were found in the organs of albino rats of both sexes, but in the histopathological analysis of liver and kidneys of albino rats treated group at doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg/pc, degenerative lesions were observed reversible type as cloudy swelling and hydropic degeneration that showed mild toxicity and moderate, both under experimental conditions.
