Peru is economically dependent on hydrocarbons, which is why exploring gas shale in an unconventional system will be a new source of energy. The present study is based on the existence of gas shale in the Cabanillas formation in the south of the Marañón basin to determine the gas potential and increase the gas. Also evaluate gas shale to increase gas reserves in Peru. The presence of shale and the potential of the gas shale of the Cabanillas formation in the Marañón basin to increase gas reserves in the country. The first phase encompasses the theoretical - conceptual framework; for which a collection and bibliographic review was carried out (digital data from the records of the exploratory wells, seismic information, reports and data analysis but not of the state of the art) in the southern part of the Marañón basin where hydrocarbons are exploited. In the second phase of the investigation, it included the analysis of well logs and the identification of the shales of the Cabanillas formation as a source rock in the subsoil, as well as their petrophysical properties. Based on the information obtained from stratigraphic, structural correlations and a sedimentary environment model of the formation were made. In the third phase the geophysical analysis and geochemical analysis were performed. The interpretation of the seismic lines served to determine their extension and thickness, as well as their tectonic-structural evolution of the Cabanillas formation in the study area. Geochemical analysis was performed based on data from existing laboratory studies, and total organic carbon (TOC), organic matter maturity (Ro), thermal history, and source rock thickness were determined. In the fourth phase, the results of the maps and the volume of the objective formation for the estimation of the calculation of reserves are presented. The Cabanillas formation is considered as a hydrocarbon source rock in the study area in the southern part of the Marañón basin. The shales of the Cabanillas formation are type III marine-pro-oil shales and have a TOC of 3.71% and a vitrinite (Ro) reflectance of 1.8-2.8, which is a potential hydrocarbon generator.
