OBJECTIVE: Determine the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of peritonitis in patients with peritoneal dialysis at the Adolfo Guevara Velasco hospital. DESIGN: Descriptive, retrospective, observational study. The study population is made up of all patients who have a clinical and laboratory diagnosis of peritonitis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis from 2017 to 2022. The clinical records and record book were reviewed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients treated at the Adolfo Guevara Velasco Hospital, during the period 2017 to 2022, who have presented an infectious complication such as (infection in entry and exit orifices, infection of the subcutaneous duct and peritonitis) will be part of the study, The data will be obtained from the Peritoneal Dialysis Unit of the Adolfo Guevara Velasco Hospital, likewise the results of peritoneal fluid and its corresponding study will be collected in a previously prepared data sheet. As the source of information, the clinical records of the Peritoneal Dialysis Unit of the Adolfo Guevara Velasco Hospital, EsSalud, and the notebook where all the service data are recorded will be taken. All patients in the study are from the Adolfo Guevara Velasco Hospital and the statistical analysis will be carried out using the frequency tables. RESULTS: the rate of peritonitis in patients in the peritoneal dialysis program is high, being 1.45 in males and 1.55 in females, the most notable clinical characteristics and in order of frequency were abdominal pain in 100% of patients, nausea in 80.6%, vomiting in 61.3%. fever in 41.9%, loss of appetite in 23% and less frequently constipation and diarrhea. The average age in men to develop peritonitis was 58.48 years and in women 47.76 years, deducing that women are younger when developing peritonitis. Laboratory characteristics such as the presence of leukocytes greater than 100 per field, the presence of Nuclear polymorphism greater than 50% and the appearance of dialysate fluid are relevant to make a diagnosis of peritonitis since they are predominantly significant.
