Introduction: Liver cirrhosis is a public health problem, it is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the world; in Peru, liver cirrhosis with a mortality rate of 9.48 per 100,000 inhabitants, ranks 5th, in order of magnitude among the general deaths; thus, we observed that esophageal varicose veins are a common complication of liver cirrhosis, whose importance lies in the very high mortality associated with its rupture; In Cusco, we do not have research studies that allow us to know how many of our patients with liver cirrhosis develop esophageal, gastric or gastroesophageal varicose veins, in addition if height influences in some way the physiopathological development of portal hypertension and varicose veins. Objective: To determine the prevalence of esophagogastric varicose veins diagnosed by high endoscopy in patients with liver cirrhosis treated at the Regional Hospital of Cusco, 2017. Hypothesis: There is a high prevalence of esophageal varicose veins diagnosed by high endoscopy in patients with liver cirrhosis treated at the Regional Hospital of Cusco, 2017. Material and methods: The present study is a descriptive, retrospective and crosssectional observational type applied in the Gastroenterology Service of the Regional Hospital of Cusco, constituted by patients with the diagnosis of Hepatic Cirrhosis in whom high endoscopy was performed, finding esophageal, gastric and gastroesophageal varicose veins; the data was analyzed in Excel and processed in the SPSS 20.0 program. Results: Of a population of 79 patients with liver cirrhosis with diagnosis of varicose veins by endoscopy, 63 of them presented esophageal varicose veins representing 79.7%, 2 of them presented gastric varicose veins representing 2.5% and 14 of them presented Gastroesophageal varicose veins representing 17.7%. In relation to age it was obtained that 10.1% have [20 to 30 years old], 15.2% have [30 to 40 years old], 19% have [40 to 50 years old], 29.1% have [50 to 60 years old> and 26.6% are over 60 years old. Regarding gender, 60.8% were males and 39.2% were females. Conclusions: Esophageal varicose veins were diagnosed by high endoscopy in 63 patients, representing 79.7% of the total. In the first place, the gastroesophageal varicose veins were diagnosed by upper endoscopy in 14 patients, representing 17.7% of the total. 2nd place, gastric varicose veins were diagnosed by high endoscopy in 2 patients representing 2.5% of the total, finding 3rd place.
