This study seeks to identify the effect of socioeconomic status on the school achievement of students in the Southern Macro Region of Peru during the period 2002-2017. Socioeconomic status is an important predictor of school achievement and knowing its influence on school achievement in the Southern Macro Region is relevant for public educational policies. The research is correlational, with a quantitative approach, and with a non-experimental design. We use the database of the longitudinal study Young Lives with an analysis sample that includes 1,301 children in the study period. A linear regression model with fixed effects is used to control for differences in time that are constant among the students, and a set of control variables. The main results indicate that the difference in educational performance between a student of socioeconomic status E and a student of socioeconomic status A is up to 14.3% in text production and 6% in reading comprehension. On the other hand, a student who belongs to socioeconomic status A attends up to 160 more hours per year compared to a student who belongs to socioeconomic status E. Likewise, no effect of socioeconomic status has been found on the school dropout rate of students from the Macro South Region of Peru during the period 2002-2017.
