This research has aimed to determine the level of proficiency and knowledge of technical English during the educational process in the professional career of tour guide in the Institute Khipu from Cusco, period 2019. This research is quantitative, with a descriptive scope, a non-experimental and cross-sectional design, with a population from the fifth and sixth terms. A non-probabilistic sampling of 110 students. The data collection technique was a survey and an exam. The instruments were 2 questionnaires. Most important results were: in regard to the basic competencies 55.45% of the students claimed to be “sometimes“ competent when communicating, as to the generic competencies 47.27% claimed “sometimes“ to be competent as the main answer, and finally with specific competencies 43.64 % being also, “sometimes“, the main answer. With respect to the questionnaire to measure the knowledge of technical English. In the declarative knowledge questionnaire, 91.82% of the students obtained really low results, the questionnaire for procedural knowledge was divided into two parts: reading comprehension and writing. The first one with 88,18% of students who got poor results and the second one with 87,27% of students with the same poor result. Finally, the motivation questionnaire showed a positive assessment of English in regard to its importance in the career, with 78.18% being “always“ as the main answer. Therefore, it is concluded that the students of both the fifth and sixth semesters do not show communicative competence with English for the labor market. Regarding the knowledge of technical English, the results suggest that these are not developed or worked by the institution, despite the fact that they are a fundamental part of in acquisition of more complex knowledge in English.
