Introduction: Migraine is a neurological disorder characterized by moderate to severe headache pain, typically disabling, unilateral, and pulsating, lasting between 4 to 72 hours in adults. In Peru, a migraine prevalence of 22.8% was reported in 2015 among the population. Treatment for this disorder primarily focuses on pharmacological approaches, primarily nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), neglecting non-pharmacological alternative therapies that may improve and prevent this condition, such as lifestyle modifications, particularly increased physical activity. In Peru, 83.2% of individuals do not engage in leisuretime physical activity, with 41.7% of them being sedentary. Objectives: To determine the association between migraine and physical activity among Human Medicine students at the Universidad Andina del Cusco, 2024. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, non-experimental, observational, and correlational analysis was conducted on a sample of 213 students, selected using nonprobabilistic quota sampling. These students were surveyed using the ALCOI 95 questionnaire for migraine diagnosis, and the IPAQ questionnaire to assess physical activity levels. The results were analyzed based on absolute frequencies and the corresponding percentages, variables were related to the OR and Chi square association measure, with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: The study included 213 Human Medicine students from the 1st to 12th semester, selected based on specific criteria. It was found that the frequency of migraine was 12% (n=27) among students, with 7.51% (n=16) experiencing migraine without aura and 5.16% (n=11) with aura. Additionally, only 6.57% (n=14) of surveyed students reported no headaches of any kind; however, 80.75% (n=172) experienced other types of headaches. Regarding physical activity, 39.91% of students engaged in high physical activity, 30.99% in moderate physical activity, and 29.11% in low physical activity. Gender analysis showed that 7.5% of migraine cases were female (p > 0.05). Regarding the association between low physical activity and migraine, an OR of 3.096 was found (p < 0.05), while for moderate to high-intensity physical activity and migraine, an OR of 0.323 was obtained (p < 0.05); and for high physical activity and migraine, an OR of 0.225 was calculated (p < 0.05). Of the sample, 53.99% (n=115) reported a family history of migraine, with 7.5% (p > 0.05) actually experiencing migraine, most commonly inherited from their mother or father (57.39%, n=66). Conclusions: Among human medicine students at the Andean University of Cusco, it was found that those who performed moderate and high intensity physical activity had 3.1 times less risk of suffering from migraine.
