Introduction: The hospital stay is the days a patient is hospitalized, that is, the days that he receives medical attention and hospital services. Its average is considered a management indicator that indirectly shows quality of service and deficiencies in hospital management. Objective: To determine the factors associated with prolonged hospital stay in the internal medicine service, Adolfo Guevara Velasco National Hospital in Cusco, 2017. Material and methods: A non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective and correlational study, carried out in the Adolfo Guevara Velasco National Hospital during the period January to December 2017, in 113 patients with prolonged hospital stay, who met the selection criteria. A review of medical records was made, a database was entered, and the SPSS 23 version was used for data processing, with descriptive and basic inferential statistics. Results: The median of the prolonged hospital stay was 11 days, the most frequent type of admission was by emergency (97.3%), the diagnoses most frequently found were CAP (28.3) and UTI (18.6%), the comorbidities that were observed were AHT (40.7%) and DM (27.4%). Obesity was observed in 18.6% of the population. The factors related to prolonged hospital stay are the HAP (p = 0.001, OR = 6.31), complications (p = 0.034, OR = 2.26), delivery time of auxiliary tests (p = 0.042, OR = 2.18), time of radiographs delivery (p = 0.005, OR = 3.36), the response time to the interconsultation (p = 0.025, OR = 2.37), the time of performing procedures (p = 0.000, OR = 5.41) and inappropriate admission (p = 0.002, OR = 8.08). Conclusions: The HAP, the complications, the delay in the delivery time of auxiliary exams, the radiographs, the performance of procedures and the answer to the interconsultation; as well as inappropriate admission are factors related to a prolonged hospital stay.
