The objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of investment in water and sanitation by the National Urban Sanitation Program on poverty reduction in Peru during the period 2012-2021. A quantitative approach was adopted with an applied non-experimental design, under a descriptive-correlational scope using the hypothetical-deductive method. Through regression analysis, significant evidence was found that investments in various financing modalities, including transfers, work for tax, contracts and executing core, effectively reduce both general and extreme poverty. Specifically, the results revealed that the impact of the sanitation program on overall poverty was a 3.5 percentage point reduction and a 1.2 percentage point reduction on extreme poverty in the base specifications. Likewise, the transfer modality showed a decrease of 4.45 points in general poverty and 12.5 percentage points in extreme poverty when controls for sanitation are included. In the work-for-tax modality, a reduction in poverty of 8.7 percentage points and in extreme poverty of 2 percentage points was observed, highlighting the effectiveness of this modality. On the other hand, investments under the contract modality presented a reduction of 8.3 percentage points in general poverty and 2 points in extreme poverty. Finally, the executing core showed a notable decrease in general poverty with a coefficient of 25.7 points in the base regression, although the effect on extreme poverty did not turn out to be significant, underlining the importance of effective implementation of the programs. These results highlight the relevance of continuing and expanding urban sanitation programs as an effective tool to alleviate poverty in urban areas of Peru, with a particular focus on investment modalities that maximize benefits in terms of poverty reduction and poverty. extreme.
