The purpose of the study is to determine the level of academic knowledge and applicability of Dorothea Orem's theory, by the students of the Professional School of Nursing of the Andean University of Cusco in undergraduate practice in 2017. The non-Experimental, descriptive and explanatory design study that allows to measure the knowledge and application of the Self-Care Deficit theory in the population of 149 undergraduate students at the Professional School of Nursing of the Andean University of Cusco. Using the survey technique, with an instrument that evaluates Dorothea Orem's theory in its different dimensions, the analysis of the results was carried out using the SPSS program, which allowed us to establish the percentages whose results were examined. Obtaining as a conclusion that there is an inadequate level of academic knowledge and applicability in undergraduate practice of Dorothea Orem's theory by students of the Professional School of Nursing of the Andean University of Cusco. New teaching-learning strategies should be considered, achieving in students and graduates a substantive change in their undergraduate training; therefore their professional identification, improving the quality of nursing care and professional practice.
