Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a cardiovascular disease that occurs most frequently worldwide, and is more common in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which contributes significantly to the mortality of these people. The following study aims to identify the risk factors related to AMI in type 2 diabetics at the Regional Hospital of Cusco and the Antonio Lorena Hospital from 2021 to 2023. Methods: An observational, retrospective, case-control study was carried out on 524 patients with type 2 diabetes. Of them, a sample of 102 patients was taken with 34 cases and 68 controls. OR and statistical tests of significance were used. Results: Of the total of 524 patients with DM2, a sample of 102 patients was obtained, of which 34 were cases and 68 controls (1:2), of the 34 cases, 17 were female (50%), the average age in The cases were 62.65 years +/- 13.2 and in the controls the average age was 56.28 +/- 14.4 (p = 0.033), regarding the risk factors that were associated with AMI. in patients with DM2 were HbA1c > 7.5% (OR = 9.3; 95% CI 3.221 - 27.25; p = 000), HBP (OR = 3.968; 95% CI 1,663 - 9,471; p = 0.001 ), obesity (OR = 7.071; 95% CI 2.828 – 18.685; p = 0.000), dyslipidemia (OR = 11.62; 95% CI 3.97 – 34.06; p = 0.0001) and an index glucose – triglyceride > 5.32 (OR = 5.921; 95% CI 2176 – 16.115; p = 0.0005). Conclusions: At the Regional Hospital of Cusco and the Antonio Lorena Hospital between 2021 and 2023, the risk factors that were associated with AMI in patients with DM2 were dyslipidemia, an HbA1c greater than 7.5%, obesity, high blood pressure and a glucose-triglyceride index greater than 5.32.
