OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present investigation was to determine the relationship between the height of the smile line and the insertion of the upper lip frenulum in students of stomatology of the Universidad Andina del Cusco, 2017. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study corresponds to a quantitative, observational, descriptive, relational and transversal research. The population consisted of 100 students between 18 and 25 years old, from the ¨Universidad Andina del Cusco¨, 2017. A non-probabilistic sample was taken for convenience. The technique that was used in the research was the direct clinical observation and the filling of data collection form, previously the signing of the inform of consentiment. We performed an analysis of the data obtained and the Pearson test for correlations. RESULTS: The classification of the smile line, according to Kina, which is observed most frequently in the total population studied was the midline with a total of 55% incidence; Followed by discharge with 41% incidence and finally the smile line down with a 4% incidence. The height of the smile line presented with greater predisposition in males was the middle line with a total of 65%, followed by the line of the high smile with 25%, and the one who had less predisposition was the Smile line low with a 10%. The height of the smile line presented with greater predisposition in the female sex was the high line with a total of 51.67%, followed by the line of the average smile with a 48.33%, and the one who had less predisposition was the Line smile with 0%. It was observed that there was greater presence of a high smile line in the female sex, while in the male there was a greater predisposition to have the average smile line. The type of insertion of the upper labial frenulum, according to the classification of Placek and Colls, more frequent in the total population studied was the mucosal frenulum with a 52% incidence, followed by the gingival frenum with 35% incidence, Papillary frenum with 13% and finally the penetrating frenulum with a 0% incidence. The insertion of the upper lipfrenulum in the male sex, presented with greater predisposition was the mucosal frenulum with 57.5%, followed by the gingival frenum with 27.5%, then the papillary frenulum with 15%, and finally the penetrating frenulum with A 0%. The insertion of the upper lip frenulum in the female sex, presented with greater predisposition was the mucosal frenulum with 48.33%, followed by the gingival frenum with 40%, then the papillary frenulum with 11.67%, and finally then penetrating frenulum With 0%. It was observed that there was a greater predisposition to have a mucosal frenulum in the female sex with 48.33%, and there was a predisposition to have a gingival frenum in 40%. We also observed that there was a greater predisposition to have a papillary frenum in the male sex with 15%. Also, there were no cases with penetrating frenulum in any of the students who underwent the study. CONCLUSIONS: There is a statistically significant relationship between the height of the labial line and the insertion of the superior frenulum. The height of the smile line, which is observed most frequently was the midline; Followed by the high and finally the low smile line. The type of insertion of the most frequent superior frenulum frenulum was the mucosal frenum, followed by the gingival frenum, then the papillary frenulum and finally the penetrating frenulum.
