This work focuses on analyzing the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on unemployment and economic growth in Latin America during the period 2014-2023. FDI has experienced significant growth in the region, reaching $224.570 billion in 2022, marking a 55.2% increase from the previous year (CEPAL, 2023a). This historic increase underscores the importance of evaluating how these investments affect the Latin American labor market. The research aims to determine whether FDI inflows have contributed positively or negatively to the unemployment rate in the region. It starts from the hypothesis that significant increases in foreign capital may reduce unemployment, a hypothesis to be evaluated using Vector Autoregressive (VAR) and Vector Error Correction (VEC) models. Furthermore, the study will explore the causal dynamics among FDI, economic growth, and unemployment. The main objective is to identify specific increases in FDI that have driven the decrease in unemployment in Latin America, in order to provide economic policy recommendations that promote sustainable growth. To achieve this, the study conducts a thorough review of existing literature, analyzes relevant data, and highlights pertinent stylized facts regarding the evolution of FDI in the region.
